Diff view of S'pore n Malaysia

Political Differences
Singapore- political parties were multi-racial in form and action
Malaysia- political parties along racial lines n interest of indivual races were protected by their own political party

Treatment of diff Races
S'pore- All races equally treated n given equal opportunities
Malaysia- special privileges to malays to improve standard of living but not to other races

Expectations
S'pore- everyone treated equally n work towards a multi-racial policy
Malaysia- Want S'pore to adhere to e system tat existed in malaya

Political Reasons

1963 General Election
- Form Singapore Alliance(consist of UMNO,MCA,MIC)
-prepare for greater involvment in politics in s'pore
-leaders from federal govt supported them
-Alliance won no seats though expected
-votes for PAP increased
>malays in S'pore no longer attracted to UMNO's communal politics although they clamied to present malay interest
>malays in S'pore prefer PAP's non communal approach to politics
>Insensitive remarks of Alliance strained relations

1964 Federal Election
-PAP took part to establish itself as a Malaysia political party
-work towards closing gaps between rich n poor by
-PAP won one seat
>upset Alliance - critising privileges given to malays
>PAP did not win much support- not enuff time to publicise
>However,attract mani to e rallies
>Seen as a direct challenge to it supremancy by Alliance
>UMNO critised PAP
>Saw PAP as a threat to malay dominance
